In one of my classes at Arizona State University, as a group project we were required to build a hospital management system. While other groups decided to go with C++, Java and other heavy languages, we decided to approach the problem using a dynamic website. I was in charge of the GUI and all graphical elements. However only one of my teammates knew PHP4, I ended up teaching everyone PHP5. Our project was completed in about 3 months and was very simplistic and easy to use. (PHP5, MySQL, HTML and JavaScript)

During my time at Arizona State University, I created a Point of Sales software for my mother’s store. It contained all the products that she sold along with their prices and codes. This helped her use any computer to process a sale without the need of installing any software on any computer. It was even compatible with any bar code scanner device. It was used for two years and had to be retired because the government in Guatemala placed a law stating that all sales software had to be licensed by the Guatemalan IRS. Revista ciclismo was a project created for my sister. She started a cycling magazine called "Revista Ciclismo". It was a simple online version of the magazine featuring online advertisement, a CMS backend and an AD Manager. The system stored each issue's menu in the database as XML that was loaded into Flash and the main content as HTML. It was the first time I created a CMS software. It was also the first time I used XML for data manipulation between languages. Unfortunately the magazine had a two-year run and was retired. (PHP, HTML, JavaScript, jQuery, XML, MySQL, and Flash)

One of the departments that I used to maintain at ASU was the Greek Life department. Every week Greek Life would meet with the councils to keep status updates on all the Fraternities and Sororities. During one of these meetings, the Interfraternal Council President approached me and asked me to help them update their website. I remodeled the IFC website giving it a completely graphical layout featuring an image gallery that would pull images from Flicker using jQuery (This was before Flicker had any external tools to access their pictures), and easy file manipulation for updates. After creating the ASU IFC website, I was asked to create a common lading page for all the councils at ASU. I showed them a couple of layouts including an old-styled book with mouse page flip, and a layout of a secretive Greek shrine of Sparky the ASU Mascot. They liked both ideas but decided that it would be best to feature a non-interactive version of the splash page, so they went with the Sparky Shrine. I also created a non-flash version for the computers that didn’t have flash. (Flash, JavaScript and HTML)

A couple of months later I was contacted by the ASU Panhellenic Council President where she requested me to build them a website as well. Her website featured the same environment as the IFC website, a full graphical layout, a gallery and a similar simple file system for updating. In this case I used a single PHP file which contains the entire HTML preformatted website separated by sections using switch cases. The website was up in two weeks. (HTML, JavaScript, jQuery, AJAX and PHP4.5)

As a smaller project, the IFC Council requested me to create a Greek Week website where Greek members could see the Greek Week schedule of events and activities and could also vote for the 2008 Greek God and Goddess. The voting system was very simple. It used IP filtering along with email validation to help reduce the amount of fake votes. It was also completely automated where the end date would automatically disable the voting feature and show a results graph of the votes using Google Chart Tools. Later that year I was contacted by a realtor that wanted a website. The problem was that she wanted a website that she could edit herself, but she wasn’t very apt with computers other than using Microsoft Word. I resulted in creating my own CMS framework where she could update the content of the website on her own without the need of a big complicated CMS such as Joomla or similar software. So I created a single-click edit website. The website featured the ability to add side content to a single page with unlimited sections. I used FCK Editor for the text editor that was customized to use only the styles on the website. (HTML, JavaScript, jQuery, FCK Editor, AJAX and MySQL)

During the Fall Semester I joined a class called “Human Robot Interaction” where we worked on a project called Mission to Mars sponsored by ASU and NASA. The project entailed simulating an entire mission to Mars. There were 12 different teams conformed of engineer students from Mechanical, Aerospace, Computer Systems and Computer Science. Each team specializing in a different part of the mission. Our team was focused on the Astronaut’s space suit. We were required to create a website to document our research. I created the website using the same framework used in the “Land Capital Group” project. The only difference was that I skinned it differently. (HTML, JavaScript, jQuery, FCK Editor, AJAX and MySQL)

In the engineering world at ASU each student has to participate in a yearlong project called the Capstone project or seniors project. My team created a project called SANDLS formerly known as GALLAG. SANDALS was originally a project that would use sensors to receive input from a device or object inside a house. The project used door sensors that trigger an event in our motivational software. The web-based software received an input of a wireless device via a main receiver that was connected to the Linux server, the signal was then decoded using a Perl script and transferred to MySQL. The software would keep track of the timeline of when an object was used and for how long it was used. This helped motivate the user by awarding them points per activity where the sensor was attached. I successfully implemented both the UI in HTML, CSS and JavaScript and the Device Decoder script in Perl. (HTML, JavaScript, jQuery, AJAX, JSP, MySQL and Perl)

During the fall semester, along with my Capstone, I was in a database class where we were required to team up with two other students to create an online web-store. But there weren’t enough students to assemble all the groups evenly that my group and another had to be of two students. As class went by I took lead in the project and assigned tasks for both of us to do. Unfortunately my teammate wasn’t very interested in the project and decided to leave me on my own. So using my skills I build a web-store in two weeks. Every group had to present they’re project in front of the class and the teacher would award the best project of the class. As I presented my project I was awarded the best project of the class. The teacher, knowing that I did the project by myself, later congratulated me in an email. She also requested me to join her research department for database management. Regrettably I graduated that same semester and wasn’t able to join her research department.
